Artist's Statement |
“I've always felt I was born with a pencil in my hand and for as long as I can remember my subject has always been horses. The horse and the beauty of it’s form and spirit are the foundations of my portraits. There is no other subject that stirs the need inside me to create as the horse does.” Maria has been drawing horses since she was a child in Staten Island, NY. Although she studied some fine art in college, she feels her talent is primarily natural and self taught. Her works usually start with photographs she has taken and inspire her, then evolve into compositions in which light against dark and fine detail are the primary focus. The pencil is her tool of choice because it gives her great control and versatility.
“To me, art is a synthesis of my personal feelings, a subject that inspires me and my materials and techniques. Realism is my primary goal. I want my subject to look as though it will come to life and canter off the paper.” |
