Artist's Statement

I have been painting for as long as I can remember.  When I was introduced to painting “alla prima” everything changed for me and my work.  I am fascinated by the play of light and shadow.  It is the effect light has on a subject that draws me to it.  The way light falls across an object can change an ordinary scene into an extraordinary one.  It is the joy I feel when I encounter one of these scenes that I try to capture on my canvases. This is accomplished by the adherence to light and shadow patterns, the use of vivid descriptive color, and bold expressive brushwork.  Being an artist is a privilege. It is about being in a special place and finding the means to express how I feel about that place.  If I do everything just right, I get to share some of the magic I feel with those who view my work.

Grande Ole Ladies

With the oil spill this spring our tiny little harbor at Engelhard, NC was filled with shrimp boats.  I loved the reflections of the boats on the water, the natural color harmonies, and the counterpoint of the tall vertical masts for the nets with the horizontal ripples in the water made this scene perfect.  It begged to be painted!!!!
