I’ve always had a deep reverence for nature, and when I paint the landscape, I strive to express the aspects that evoke my emotions. I am inspired by the grand vistas, brilliant light and physicality of the geological formations where I live.
I like to paint en plein air, and many times these small paintings become references for larger studio paintings. The development of a painting in the studio has a life of its own, where I synthesize the visual information I've gathered outdoors with the process of orchestrating the complexities of composition and color harmonies, eventually distilling the image to its essentials.
My aim in representing the landscape is not based on strict adherence to reality, but rather an expressive transcription of my experience of the landscape. I feel the work is successful when the painting conveys a sense of place and resonates with the viewer.
