Brenda Bruckner grew up in a large family on a
South Dakota wheat farm and even as a small child had a love affair
with horses. She was drawing them long before she was able to own or
even ride one. Horses have always been her inspiration to draw
and paint. As Brenda grew older and both her artistic and
horsemanship skills grew, she specialized and found her favorite
subjects were working cowhorses. She draws and paints them in
their 'everyday clothes' in quiet ranch scenes with realism and
authenticity. Her toughest critics are the 'old cowboys' who
know a good horse and appreciate how she portrays them.
Brenda studied commercial art for a short time but is primarily
self taught. She loves detail and precision so has found
colored pencil to be her medium of choice although has works in
graphite, oil and acrylic as well. She and her husband own and
operate a cattle ranch in southern South Dakota so her favorite
subject matter is always at hand . Bruckner is a
self-professed 'home body' and spends most of her time at her studio
on the ranch or helping put up hay and working cattle with her
husband.
"A photograph just preserves an animal's image…. it is the artist that shows you its soul and makes you part of it. "
