Deborah English is an artist with homes in Baltimore, Maryland and rural East Texas. A life long interest in the cattle business has provided inspiration for much of her work. Yet, as a figurative painter, she finds subject matter in all the world around her; her oeuvre contains landscapes, animal paintings, figure paintings and still life. She is attracted by the interstices of the natural and man-made worlds.
She is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art (cum laude), and has exhibitied consistently in the two decades since finishing there. In addition to her gallery exhibitions, her work has appeared in numerous charity events, with such venues as the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore and the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland.
At the Maryland Institue, she had extensive training in theories of abstraction, and, while today she paints objectively, she continues to value the significance of abstraction in realist art. She uses her own reference photographs as the intial springboard, and alters the final product to produce the sensation she chooses.
Deborah English is currently represented by the Steven Scott Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland. A complete resume is available upon request.

"Hotlander" |
Oil/canvas |
|
"Hotlander" is the name given to
a type of cross-bred cattle.
Their line is developed with the hot, humid climate of the South East in mind.
We use them on our ranch, crossing them with Red Angus. This bull is on his way to have his spring physical check-up.

"Crouching Heron" |
Oil/canvas |

At the ranch, our house sits very near a
shallow lake, which is very popular with
birds, especially 'waders'. There are several Great Blue Herons who live there year-round.
This guy hangs out on this fence post after mealtimes. He is huddled against a rainy afternoon. I imagine that he is cogitating on whatever herons contemplate... probably the next frog! |
