Artist's Statement

Oil painting is a constant source of wonder to me that with nothing but a squeeze of paint, some good brushes, and a receptive surface you can tell a story. Transparency, reflections, the power of a flowing stream, a beam of sunshine illuminating the edges of my subject, can all be captured on canvas. The hope of pulling off that little miracle every now and then is what brings me to the canvas almost every day. My love of the small things in life has led me to a realistic style. I generally want to capture my subject completely as it is, editing only to achieve good composition. I use multiple thin layers of paint until the desired effect is achieved, with a little impasto for the lightest areas.

I started painting when I was a kid, and was fortunate to have a high school teacher who was also a wonderful artist. His beautiful figurative paintings were inspirational. So, while earning a living first as a brewing chemist, and later as a CPA, painting was always in the back of my mind. I was fortunate to be able to leave the world of accounting a few years ago, to pursue a career in painting. I have been able to study with some of my favorite artists including Kim English, Kevin Wechback, Mark Daily, Michelle Torrez and Doug Dawson. I exhibit regularly in local, regional and national shows.

August Pond

"August Pond"

Oil on canvas

Our pond changes so much from month to month.  In August the pads are mature, a carpet of green, and in full bloom.  I like these small yellow flowers as much as the large, showy, more commonly seen blossoms.

Dimensions: 18" H x 24 " W
$1200.00 framed

Portrait of a River VIII

"Portrait of a River VIII"

Oil on canvas

I have a special affinity for water after spending summers at my grandparent’s cottage.  This particular spot is a river running through Denver, and has reflections and movement unlike any spot I’ve ever found.  ‘Large’ is the only way to paint this subject.

Dimensions:30" H x 60" W
$8000.00 framed
