Artist's Statement

Susan Larson is a Colorado artist who paints with watercolor and gouache, and enjoys mixing pastels and pen & ink into her paintings. She is a realistic painter whose subjects are from her own photographs. Susan also paints more impressionistic work and plein air. Her subjects include wild animals and birds, horses, landscapes, aspen, flowers, people and pets. She is fascinated by the display of light on a subject, and continues to experiment with color in her work. Susan spent years of her life drawing in black and white media.

Susan is a Signature Member of the Colorado Watercolor Society, a Signature Member of the Wyoming Watercolor Society, and a Signature Member of the Pikes Peak Watercolor Society.

"Sunbathing in a Fur Coat"

Watercolor and gouache

My Himalayan cat was sitting in the January sun bathing himself. I had to take a number of photographs because I was fascinated by the play of the light across his fur, even though I could not see his beautiful face in the strong light.

This painting was in the 2008 Colorado Watercolor Society's State Show.

Autumn Foothills

Watercolor and gouache

This is a watercolor and gouache painting of early evening light in the autumn foothills. I was intrigued by the soft atmospheric quality of the light, and the beautiful colors as the sun was setting along the front range.

This piece won an award at the 2009 Colorado Watercolor Society's State Show.
