Artist's Statement

I think what I find so interesting in horses is their personalities. On the outside, in the wild they seem almost void of personality - only intent on self-preservation and orientation within the herd, fighting , threatening, and competing with one another to maintain their status within. Yet when taken from this environment and placed in human hands a whole new "person" emerges, with all the emotions we are familiar with…gentleness, playfulness, affection, devotion, and in some, fear and shyness. It is that "person" within that is so endearing and fun to love, every individual displaying their outlook on life. Some are carefree and casual, others intense, and still others shy and withdrawn, but each in their own way seem to genuinely respond to a loving, caring hand in ways that touch our hearts.

It is with great admiration of this magnificent creature that I attempt to depict the "person" inside, cast in bronze, frozen in time.

River's Edge

"River's Edge"

Bronze sculpture
I am very excited about my latest work "Rivers Edge" as I believe it possesses that unique character that transcends the parameters of Western Art and Equine Art with its equine theme and the rural aspect of its location, a raging spring river. I feel their anxious desire to reach the river's edge, and the distress of the young colt trying to hold on to its mom while she turns to reassure him.

I imagine a wild herd much like this, finding a swollen creek transformed into a raging river after a spring thaw, blocking their search for green pastures and demanding their crossing.

On the Sixth Day

"On the Sixth Day"

Bronze sculpture

My completed bronze “On The Sixth Day”, depicts the bursting forth of the horse from the earth as referenced in the Biblical account of creation in Genesis 1:24.

I was drawn to do this when reflecting on how blessed and thankful I am to be allowed to have this capacity to express my passion, and how grateful I am for the creation of such a magnificent creature given to man to love and befriend.
