Suzanne Morris

Richmond, VA

Artist's Statement

Working in an alla prima method, using broken color, and expressive brushwork, Suzanne Morris looks beyond the literal interpretation of a scene to capture the spirit of her subjects. Drawn to a scene that is magically transformed by the light falling across it, she uses a limited palette to create harmonious paintings that tell a story of a particular time and place.

She is a signature member of ASMA, and PAPNM; an artist member of LPAPA; and an associate member of CAC, OPA, MAPAPA, OPS, PAAC, and WAOW. She served as Show Chair for AIS in 2013.   In addition to participating in gallery shows, Morris competes in plein air festivals and her work continues to be accepted into national and invitational shows. She has mounted at least one solo show every year since she began painting full time. Suzanne teaches weekly classes and workshops. She has served as both entry and awards juror. Most notable of her corporate collectors are Duke University Hospital, The UCLA Medical School at Irvine, Burt’s Bees, East Carolina Bank, and the Commandant of Mid Shipmen at Annapolis Naval Academy. Her work has been featured in American Art Collector, Plein Air, and Southwest Art magazines.

Grande Ole Ladies

"Morning Sparkles"

oil on linen

This is a studio painting from a plein air sketch done at the Plein Air Convention in Monterey, CA. I was initially drawn to the sparkles of light on the water. The combined shapes of the back lit boats in the harbor made the composition work.

Dimensions: 20”h x 16”w
$1425 framed (plus shipping)

Solitary Beach

"Big City Bright Lights"

oil on linen

I love the yellow taxis in Manhattan. I used a dulled down purple to complement the yellow taxis in the road and simplified background buildings, then used the bright spots of the neon lights to lead you through the painting.

Dimensions: 11"H x 14"W
