Barbara has been a professional artist since 1965 when she began her art career as a fashion illustrator after art school in Seattle, WA and study with William Cumming. She took a twenty-year hiatus from art to raise her children and then returned to the art world through colored pencil, serving as president of the Colored Pencil Society of America. In 2000, she co-authored Colored Pencil Solution Book. Barbara was a valued instructor for many years at the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Washington and Sitka Center for Art & Ecology in Oregon. She now authors an online teaching blog, Barbara Newton Art Journal.
Barbara currently works primarily in pastel and is a Signature member of the Northwest Pastel Society, the Pastel Society of the West Coast, the Pastel Society of America and is an International Association of Pastel Societies 2013 Master Circle Honoree. She is a juried member of Women Painters of Washington and has played a pivotal role in that organization since 1998.
