Art for me is a translation of the image and spirit of a subject in a particular moment in time into a work of permanent remembrance. I may work from life but the visual image that compels me to paint exists as an ideal. My challenge is to transform that image in a manner that will convey the emotions it evokes. To obtain that ideal, I observe the chosen subject extensively and take photographs and video for further study. Through that process of observation and study several ideas come through that convey the spirit of the subject. Drawing out the ideas literally with charcoal or pen or conte crayon provides a physical connection to ideal that I am trying to translate.
Sometimes the drawings say it all and I stop there. Sometimes the image seems to cry out to be rendered in Oil or Pastel or drawn in Silverpoint or pen. Regardless of the medium, the final product is a window on the truth that subjects’s spirit speaks to me, whether a beloved companion, human or animal, or in beauty of the world around us, whether a natural landscape or man-made city scape.
