As representational oil painter, I draw inspiration for my work from my love of the outdoors and travel. I’ve traveled to six continents to paint and photograph, but I’m also in awe of the beauty right here in my new state of Texas. After growing up in Minnesota, I moved to Colorado where I lived for 38 years. I’ve just recently moved to the Austin, TX area and I’m having fun painting the new scenery in the beautiful Hill Country near my home. I paint en plein air as well as in my studio.
After teaching art in Colorado Springs, CO for 28 years, I now devote the majority of my time to painting, hiking and traveling. Deciding to combine these interests with my teaching skills, I've started conducting plein air painting workshops & have recently returned from teaching workshops in Provence, France and Calella de Palafrugell, Spain. I'm excited to announce two upcoming workshops, one on the beautiful Island of Korcula, off the coast of Croatia in September of 2015 and the other in Cortona, Italy in October 2015.
I earned my BS degree in art from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota and my MAT degree in Southwest Studies from Colorado College. My paintings have been in national as well as international shows & have won numerous awards. I’m a signature member of Plein Air Artists Colorado, Plein Air Painters of New Mexico and Women Artists of the West and hold associate memberships in American Women Artists, Oil Painters of America and Outdoor Painters Society. M. Stephen Doherty wrote a feature article about my work, "Rediscover Nature with Landscape Painting," in the May, 2010 American Artist magazine.
"In each of my paintings, I strive to depict the fresh energy of a particular moment, my personal connection to a special place & the feelings & sensations I felt at the time of my first encounter with the scene. I work loosely in the beginning, but then begin to refine the scene. I use layers of color, applying each brush stroke & swipe of the palette knife with confidence and a balance of spontaneity and intent, remaining open to the unexpected. I simplify the complexities of a scene to create my impressions of nature & the man made world, working to interpret reality rather than re-create it."
