Artist's Statement

Born and raised in southern California, Leslie currently resides in a small mountain community surrounded by Angeles National Forest. Primarily self-taught, Leslie uses acrylics on clayboard. Field research, as well as the birds and animals she works with, including birds of prey, bobcats, cougars, wolves and other animals provides reference material for her paintings. She also enjoys plein air painting, hiking and camping, which aid her in portraying the environment in her work.

She is a member in the Society of Animal Artists, Women Artists of the West, and Artists For Conservation.

The filly in this painting was in Dubois, Wyoming. I photographed her in the early morning light and enjoyed visiting with her and several other yearlings over a few days in September

I wanted to do a dramatic small horse portrait. I chose a red background for the white horse to impart a richness to the piece.

I chose to portray just the cubs without their mother, out exploring new surroundings, focusing on their expressions and the texture of their fur.

I start my white pieces as black and white abstracts, then incorporate animals and landscape into the composition. If it works as an abstract, it works as a more realistic rendering of a subject.
