Artist's Statement

In sculpting, I do more than capture the likeness of an individual. I tell their story. I share their heart.

Clay is immediate, it responds to my touch and energy. With a heavy hand and aggressive tooling I leave marks, messages of energy and movement. With a delicate hand I caress the clay and bring softness and emotion to the work.

I manipulate the clay to render my interpretations of the world around me or to tell a story. Using tension, balance and gesture I convey a thoughts, relate emotions or tell a story and in the process celebrate our world, elevating that which I feel is important.

My background in athletics give me a unique understanding of anatomy and balance and with subtle changes in posture, gesture or weight distribution I conjure up feelings of tension, anticipation or repose.

My work is exhibited in national juried shows with the Women Artists of the West, American Women Artists and the National Sculpture Society and the Loveland Sculpture in the Park. My bronze portrait “Fierce – the Triumph of Harriet Tubman” was purchased by the Harriet Tubman Museum in Macon, GA.

"Fierce - Portrait of Harriet Tubman"

bronze edition of 9

I was reading two books simultaneously, as I often do. The books were unrelated and not historical, however on the day that I was reading them, they both made a reference to Harriet Tubman - the Conductor of the Underground Railroad. The coincidence stirred me to create my vision on this amazing woman.

Dimensions: 15" x 11" x 10"
Mounted to double black granite base
$2,750 plus shipping

"Waiting on the #9"

Bronze edition of 20

While traveling Swizterland and Italy recently, I was intrigued with the casual confidence of the people navigating the cities by bus and train. Inspired to sculpt the essence of that smug, lazy confidence, I created this elegant young woman, sassy little date purse dangling from one finger, waiting for her train.

Dimensions: 17" x 8" x 9"
mounted to a mohogany base
$2300 plus shipping
