Artist's Statement |
|
Western life in its variety holds a special fascination for Jackie Penner. Her paintings reflect the strength of her feelings for the wildlife, people and landscape of the true west. Her farm in southeastern Washington has given this self-taught artist the perfect subject matter to work from, with both wild and domestic animals living in her back yard and surrounding farm land. Penner’s goal for her work is to relay her feelings for her subjects to the viewer.

"Spring Fever" |
Oil |
|
While on a trip to San Diego, California I had the pleasure of visiting the San Diego Zoo. It was there I was able to take the wonderful reference shots of this magnificent grizzly bear that gave me the idea for this oil painting.

"Winter Hunt" |
Oil |
|
I had the great joy of photographing this wolf while at a Terry Isaacs painting workshop in Montana. I was so taken by the look of this animal I had to sit right down and paint him.

"Header Team" |
Oil |
|
A team of Percheron Draft horses taking a much needed rest after a long day in the harvest field inspired this painting. I was especially attracted to the color transition from black to gray and then to white as that is how many of the Percheron horses turn color with age.

"Waiting to Unload" |
Oil |
|
| Each year I attend an old fashioned harvest bee held in Colfax, Washington . This driver and team were waiting in line to unload wheat into a stationary thrashing machine and I could not wait to transfer the majesty of the moment to an oil painting. |
