Artist's Statement |
I feel emotionally passionate about the subjects I paint. I am a fourth Yaqui Indian and three-fourths Hispanic. I was raised in the mining towns of Whitepine County, Nevada. My memories of my childhood have inspired me to paint the Indian stillife, western and wildlife subjects. For me, painting the old Indian pottery, old houses, Mail Pouch barns, shacks, and cars is a way of preserving the past on canvas and paper.

"Havasupai Coiled Tray" |
Acrylic |
|
| The design on this beautiful tray caught my eye right away. It's twining weaving technique made me wonder about the person who created it. Did they place red chilies on it, or corn? This peaceful Tribe lived in Arizona along the Colorado River Cataract Canyon area. Tray courtesy of the Johnson Humrickhouse Museum. |

"Winter Camp" |
Acrylic |
|
| Some years back, we were in Cody, Wyoming for an art show. The landscape reminded me of where the Indian villages might have been. So, from my imagination, I painted this tepee scene. |

"Frog Pot" |

| I Love humor. This little clay pot with the frogs climbing it's sides. It had to come from Cochiti Pueblo. I couldn't wait to put it on canvas! Pot courtesy of the Johnson Humrickhouse Museum of Coshocton, Ohio |
